IVDD in Dachshunds: What Every Owner Needs to Know
Share it Forward
If you share your home with a dachshund, you've probably heard the word "IVDD" thrown around at the vet's office or in dachshund Facebook groups. But what exactly is it — and why should every wiener dog owner take it seriously? Let's dig in. ☕🐾
What Is IVDD?
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a spinal condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae harden, rupture, or bulge — pressing against the spinal cord and causing pain, weakness, or even paralysis. Dachshunds are at the highest risk of any breed, with studies suggesting up to 1 in 4 dachshunds will experience a significant disc episode in their lifetime.
Why dachshunds? It comes down to chondrodystrophy — the same genetic trait that gives them their adorable long, low shape also causes their spinal discs to age faster than other breeds. It's one of the things that makes them uniquely wonderful and uniquely vulnerable.
Warning Signs to Watch For
IVDD can come on suddenly or progress gradually. Here's what to look out for:
- Yelping or crying when touched, picked up, or moving
- Reluctance to jump up or down from furniture or stairs
- Hunched back or neck with tense muscles
- Wobbly or unsteady gait — often described as "drunk walking"
- Weakness or dragging in the back legs
- Loss of bladder or bowel control (a serious red flag — get to the vet immediately)
If you notice any of these symptoms, don't wait. IVDD is a medical emergency when neurological symptoms are present. Time is everything.
Prevention: What You Can Do at Home
The good news? There's a lot you can do to reduce your dachshund's risk and protect their precious spine every single day.
1. Eliminate jumping. Repetitive jumping on and off furniture is one of the biggest contributors to disc stress. A quality ramp is a game-changer. We love the DoggoRamps Adjustable Couch Ramp — it's sturdy, adjustable for any couch height, and most dachshunds take to it quickly. 2. Invest in an orthopedic bed. Soft, supportive sleep surfaces help take pressure off the spine overnight. The PETMAKER Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed is a great affordable option sized perfectly for small breeds. (Affiliate link — same deal as above! 🐾)
3. Keep their weight in check. Extra weight = extra spinal stress. Feed measured meals, limit treats, and keep those walks consistent.
4. Support muscle strength. Short, leash-walked exercise (not off-leash zoomies) helps keep core muscles strong — which support the spine.
5. Learn safe handling. Always support your dachshund's back when picking them up — one hand under the chest, one under the hindquarters. Never let them dangle.
