Learn about IVDD
-
What is it?
IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) is a condition in which the discs between the vertebrae of the spine degenerate or herniate, leading to pain, nerve damage, or paralysis, commonly seen in dog breeds like Dachshunds. It occurs due to aging, genetics, or trauma, and treatment options range from rest and medication to surgery, depending on severity.
-
How common is it?
IVDD is relatively common, especially in short-legged dog breeds. Dachshunds have a 10x higher risk than any other dog breed, with 1 in 4 showing signs of symptoms from mild to severe.
-
What does treatment look like?
It depends on the severity. Mild to moderate cases may require crate rest, medications to reduce swelling and manage pain, and physical therapy.
More severe cases require surgery to remove herniated disc material and relieve spinal cord compression and post-surgical rehabilitation to regain mobility.
-
How much is surgery & rehab?
IVDD surgery and rehab can typically cost several thousand dollars, depending on factors like location, severity, and the veterinary hospital. Additional costs for diagnostics, post-surgical care, and rehabilitation can bring the total closer to $10,000 or more.
