Who is Central Texas Dachshund Rescue?

At the heart of Central Texas, a mighty team of volunteers is changing lives, one long little doxie at a time. Central Texas Dachshund Rescue (CTDR) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dachshunds in need. They’ve been a lifeline for weens who’ve been abandoned, surrendered, or left behind due to medical issues, age, or neglect.

CTDR was founded in 2000 by a group of passionate dachshund lovers who recognized a growing need in their region: too many dachshunds were being surrendered, abandoned, or overlooked in shelters across Texas. Based in Austin, Texas, they are a foster-based rescue, meaning all the dachshunds in their care live in the homes of approved volunteer fosters across Central Texas and surrounding areas. This allows them to provide personalized care, behavioral assessments, and a loving environment while the dogs await adoption. 

Because they cover such a large region, including cities like Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Waco, they’re able to rescue and rehome dachshunds from a wide geographic area and match dogs with families throughout Texas.

What started as a grassroots effort quickly evolved into a volunteer-powered nonprofit organization. From day one, CTDR committed to being more than just a rescue; they became a full-circle support system for dachshunds in need. That includes vet care, rehabilitation, spay/neuter services, microchipping, transportation, fostering, and careful adoption matchmaking.

Why Their Work Matters

Over the years, they’ve saved thousands of dachshunds, many with complex medical needs. Their network of fosters, donors, and adopters stretches across Texas and even into other states. CTDR doesn’t just scoop up dogs and find them new homes. They provide veterinary care, behavioral support, and lots of love during the in-between. Many of the dogs they rescue are seniors or have special medical needs, like IVDD. Every adoption, every vet visit, every tail wag is powered by people who believe that these dogs are worth it.

This 13-year-old senior girl came to CTDR after her previous owner could no longer care for her. With a slow step and a gentle soul, Sweet Pea was welcomed into a loving foster home. She received the comfort she needed and was adopted by someone who saw the beauty in her golden years.

Then there’s Lulu, a lively black and tan 14-year-old, who arrived after her owner passed away. When the family could not keep her, they reached out to CTDR to see if they could help, which, of course, they immediately said yes! She has already been adopted and loving her new family! 

These aren’t just rescue stories, they’re transformation stories. CTDR doesn’t just find homes; they help these dogs rediscover joy, trust, and a tail-wagging sense of belonging.
