July 2025 Coffee of the Month: Uganda Sunset
Share it Forward
From the Mountains of Rwenzori to Your Morning Mug
There’s something magical about the moment just before sunset — the soft golden light, the sense of calm, the promise of rest after a long day. This month, we’ve captured that feeling in a cup with Uganda Sunset, our featured coffee of the month. It’s more than just a delicious roast — it’s a story of people, purpose, and a place where tradition meets transformation.
🌍 Grown in the Rwenzori Mountains: The “Mountains of the Moon”
Uganda Sunset comes from the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known locally as the “Mountains of the Moon.” Rising along the western border of Uganda, this high-altitude region is one of the country’s most fertile and climate-balanced zones, ideal for growing specialty Arabica coffee.
The beans in this lot are cultivated at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 meters, where cooler temperatures slow the coffee cherry’s growth. This results in a denser bean packed with complex sugars and nuanced flavors. Combine that with volcanic soils, sustainable farming practices, and a cooperative model built on equity and transparency—and you’ve got the makings of a truly special cup.
🤝 Cultivated by Community: The Busongora North Cooperative
What makes Uganda Sunset truly remarkable is the people behind it. The beans are sourced from the Busongora North Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative, a farmer-owned and governed collective made up of over 500 smallholder families.
Each farmer is trained in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and registered with a unique identifier, ensuring full traceability from farm to cup. The cooperative model enables farmers to share resources, receive fair compensation, and invest in better farming techniques and community infrastructure.
When you sip Uganda Sunset, you’re supporting families who are not just growing coffee but building futures rooted in dignity and sustainability.
🌄 Why We Call It “Uganda Sunset”
We named this roast Uganda Sunset because of the warmth, clarity, and tranquility it delivers with each sip. Just as the setting sun paints the Rwenzori peaks with hues of amber and violet, this coffee brings together a beautiful spectrum of taste—from lively citrus to soft caramel and honeyed sweetness.
It’s the kind of coffee that invites you to slow down, savor, and appreciate the present moment. Whether you’re watching the sunrise, working through your afternoon to-do list, or enjoying a quiet evening on the porch, Uganda Sunset is the perfect companion.
☕ Cupping Notes: A Taste You’ll Remember
Uganda Sunset is a medium roast that balances body, brightness, and depth with finesse. Here’s what you can expect in every cup:
-
Flavor Profile: Juicy citrus up front—think tangerine and orange zest—followed by subtle notes of brown sugar, floral honey, and a clean, tea-like finish. As it cools, look for hints of dried stone fruit and toasted almond.
-
Body: Medium with a round, silky mouthfeel
-
Acidity: Crisp and balanced—not sharp, but bright enough to bring the flavors to life
-
Roast Level: Medium (crafted to bring out the origin characteristics)
-
Process: Washed and sun-dried
-
Varietals: 100% Arabica—SL28 and SL14
-
Altitude: 1,500–2,000m above sea level
It’s a versatile roast—ideal for pour-over, drip, French press, and even cold brew. However you choose to enjoy it, you’ll taste the care that went into every step of the journey.
🌱 Sustainability, Traceability, and Impact
In a world of anonymous mass-market coffee, Uganda Sunset stands out not just for its flavor but for its ethics and integrity. Each bean is handpicked, sorted, and processed at two central washing stations in the Kajole, Kithoma, and Kaswa parishes—areas located close to the farms to minimize transport time and maximize freshness.
Through transparent sourcing and cooperative trade, farmers receive fair prices, enabling long-term sustainability and reinvestment in their land, tools, and families. Your purchase contributes directly to these efforts.
