All Texas Dachshund Rescue:
Where Hope Finds a Home
In Texas, everything seems a little bigger—our skies, our pride, and thankfully, our hearts. For dachshunds in need, those hearts belong to the dedicated volunteers of All Texas Dachshund Rescue (ATDR). Their mission is simple but powerful: give every dachshund, no matter their past or their challenges, a chance at health, happiness, and a forever family.
A Rescue with Purpose
ATDR began in 2006 with a special focus on helping dachshunds suffering from IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), a heartbreaking but common condition for the breed. While many rescues might shy away from expensive surgeries, ongoing rehab, or mobility carts, ATDR leaned in. Their motto has always been: every dog deserves a chance.
Over time, their reach grew, but their compassion never wavered. Today, ATDR takes in dachshunds from across Texas; healthy, injured, young, old, abandoned, and everything in between. To date, they have rescued over 3600 dachshunds, finding loving homes and fresh starts.
Foster Homes, Healing Hearts
What makes ATDR special is the way they work. Every dachshund is placed in a loving foster home instead of a kennel. Here, they aren’t just waiting—they’re living. They learn to trust again, enjoy warm laps, regular meals, and safe sleep. Fosters nurse the broken, comfort the scared, and celebrate every little milestone. By the time these dachshunds are ready for adoption, they’ve already felt what it means to be loved.
Stories That Stay with You
Some rescues leave pawprints you never forget.
“Joanie” — A Fragile Heart Finds Sunshine
One of ATDR’s most memorable stories is Joanie’s. She came in in very poor condition; weak, underweight, barely responsive. Her foster mom, Cindy, tended to her around the clock: careful meals, gentle walks, fresh air, medications, and lots of love.
Over time, Joanie grew stronger, her coat started to look healthier, and she began moving around more. One of the sweetest moments: she gave a little lick, a soft thank you in dog form, and that meant Joanie was feeling safe enough to let her guard down.
Although Joanie eventually passed, she experienced true comfort, kindness, and joy in her final months. Her story inspired many, and ATDR established the Joan of Ark Memorial Fund in her memory to help other dachshunds with extreme medical needs. These stories are bittersweet, but they’re also reminders: every effort matters. Every dachshund deserves dignity, whether their journey is long or short.
Why ATDR Stands Out
• They don’t turn away from hard cases—they embrace them.
• They put dogs in homes, not kennels, so healing starts with love.
• They educate the community about dachshund health and responsible care.
• They honor the memory of those lost by helping those still waiting.
It’s not just rescue. It’s redemption.
A Call to Compassion
The truth is, ATDR can only do what it does because people care; because someone says, yes, I’ll foster. Because someone clicks donate. Because someone chooses to adopt. Every dollar, every hour, every open heart means another dachshund gets to feel safe, loved, and wanted.
Closing Thoughts
At its core, All Texas Dachshund Rescue is about more than saving dogs—it’s about restoring joy. A dachshund who once knew fear learning how to wag again. A family opening their home and finding that a little long dog fills it with immeasurable love.
If you’ve ever wondered whether one person can make a difference, just ask the thousands of dachshunds who found their forever through ATDR. Their answer is written in every happy tail.
